Case Study

The Globe - Has been synonymous with serving fine ales and food since 1720, where quality ales were brewed using spring water drawn from its own well beneath the pub, which still exists today. It’s one of the oldest public houses in Leicester, in the heritage quarter on Silver Street.

We worked hard to maintain the aesthetic appeal of the building while integrating modern features such as air-conditioning and electrical air extraction to give the eating areas a fresh focus. To add to the ambiance, we installed a new lighting system and emergency lighting throughout the building as well as a fire alarm system. Externally we installed LED floodlights to attract the eye of passersby to the beauty and warmth of this historic pub.

Did you know…?

Prior to becoming a public house, the Globe had several interesting uses, including a cattle merchant’s and accommodation for women awaiting impending execution at the hands of the noose man in nearby Gallowtree Gate!

gw-logo copyEco Barn Loddington - We were involved in the conversion of a disused brick cattle shed on the Allerton Project wildlife research farm at Loddington in Leicestershire. Designed for use as an innovation centre for LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) , the project was transformed using materials sourced from the farm, into one of the most environmentally friendly buildings in the country, winning the 2012 Property and Construction Award for Sustainable Development.

We were proactive with the design element of the building, installing solar panels onto a corrugated steel roof as well as fitting a biomass wood pellet boiler, and adding low energy lighting. Straw was used for the walls; sheep fleece for insulation, wood chips fuel the biomass boiler, which we installed, and harvested rainwater is used for toilets and showers. To complete the project, we installed 16 solar photovoltaic panels onto the roof to generate electricity (with the excess sold onto the National Grid).

These features enabled the barn to reduce the day to day running costs while promoting its eco-friendly and sustainable credentials.
