Five Steps to installing your Solar Panel System: Our Process

With the rising demand for sustainable energy solutions and the increasing appeal of reducing electricity bills, installing solar panels has become an exciting venture for homeowners. Harnessing the power of the sun to generate clean and renewable energy is not only environmentally friendly but also offers long-term cost savings.

Below is a guide to the process of installing solar panels, unveiling the steps involved and shedding light on the benefits that await.

Step 1: Assessing Your Property's Suitability

Before embarking on your solar journey, evaluating your property's suitability for solar panel installation is crucial. Factors such as the availability of unobstructed sunlight, roof orientation, shading, and structural integrity play a vital role.

Step 2: Designing the System

Once the suitability assessment is complete, the next step is designing your solar system. This includes determining the number of panels required, positioning for their optimal placement on the roof, if you require a battery storage system for any excess energy generated, and selecting the appropriate inverter and mounting equipment. Factors such as your energy consumption, available roof space, and local regulations are considered during this phase.

Something to consider is that any system over 3.68kW per phase will require prior approval, this is known as the G99 application; the regulation surrounding the connection of any form of generator device to run 'in parallel' or 'synchronised' with the mains electrical utility grid (National Grid).  Fusion will complete this application for you and manage the process. However, it can take up to 6 weeks for a response from the DNO (Distribution Network Operators). On approval from the DNO, we proceed to confirm installation dates.

Systems under the 3.68Kw threshold can be installed without prior approval. However, once the system is installed and commissioned, Fusion will complete a G98 application. This informs the DNO of the connection made to the grid infrastructure. The DNO will then send Fusion a ‘Connection Confirmation Letter’ this alongside the MCS certificate will be required to apply for the smart tariffs provided by the electrical suppliers.

Step 3: Installation Day

On the eagerly awaited installation day, a team of skilled technicians will arrive at your property to commence your installation.

Safety is the top priority with any project, and the first step is to erect scaffolding for access to the roof. Fusion manages all scaffolding requirements whilst ensuring the structure allows access and exit from the property to comply with fire regulations. Then, the installation process begins. This involves mounting the panels securely to your roof, connecting them with DC cabling, installing the inverter and AC works in the clients proposed position. Once the system is energised, the lead technician will set the monitoring platform up on the clients preferred smart device.

Step 4: Connection to the Grid

After the physical installation, the solar system needs to be connected to the grid’s infrastructure. This involves working with your utility company to finalise the interconnection process. Once this is completed, you can start generating your own clean energy while remaining connected to the grid for any additional energy needs.

After connection, the DNO will send a connection confirmation letter to Fusion which you can use to apply for a payback tariff from your preferred energy supplier. You will also require the MCS Certificate which Fusion will forward on to you within 4 working days of completion.

Step 5: Enjoying the Benefits

Congratulations! Your solar panels are now up and running. You can relish the numerous benefits that solar power brings. By generating your own electricity, you will significantly reduce your reliance on traditional energy sources, leading to substantial cost savings over time. Additionally, you’ll be contributing to a greener planet by reducing your carbon footprint and promoting sustainable energy practices.
