In a major push for clean energy, the UK government has announce as of Friday 21st March 2025 a £200 million in funding through Great British Energy to install solar panels on schools and hospitals across England. This initiative will help educational and healthcare institutions reduce energy costs and significantly cut carbon emissions.
The UK government has committed approximately £200 million to expand rooftop solar panel installations across schools and hospitals. The government is investing £80 million to equip 200 schools with solar energy systems, and allocating the remaining £100 million to install solar panels on 200 hospitals. This investment is a significant step forward boosting renewable energy adoption and reducing carbon emissions in our public sector buildings.
The government’s £200 million solar funding initiative will be primarily benefit schools in England’s North East, West Midlands, and North West- regions identified as having high levels of social needs. Each region will have at least 10 selected schools, including one further education college, which will team up with solar installers to promote careers in renewable energy and green technology.
The NHS will lead an expression of interest process to select hospitals. By the end of summer 2025 we should see the completion of the first PV installations across the UK.
Schools and hospitals across the UK have been disproportionately affected by rising energy costs in recent years. The NHS, the largest energy consumer in the UK public sector, has seen its annual energy bills double since 2019—now reaching an estimated £1.4 billion. This surge in costs is placing immense financial pressure on healthcare facilities and educational institutions, underscoring the urgent need for sustainable, cost-saving energy solutions like solar power.
According to government estimates, the planned solar panel installations could save selected schools up to £25,000 per year and hospitals up to £45,000 annually—delivering a projected £400 million in total savings over the next 30 years. These significant energy cost reductions will allow schools and hospitals to reinvest funds into essential teaching and healthcare services, boosting long-term sustainability and resilience across the public sector.
Solar panels generate 100% renewable electricity, significantly reducing dependence on the national grid. For schools and hospitals, adopting solar energy is a crucial move toward lowering carbon emissions and supporting the UK’s broader climate change and net-zero targets.
Schools equipped with solar panels can turn these systems into powerful educational tools, helping students learn about renewable energy, sustainability, and the green economy. The initiative also includes further education colleges.
“This investment in clean energy will power our NHS while saving the taxpayer millions in energy bills.” said Minister of State for Health Karin Smyth.
