Loughborough College Sports Hall

Loughborough College, a leading provider of further and higher education, has recently expanded its campus with the addition of a state-of-the-art sports hall and new teaching building. In 2024 Fusion were appointed, to work alongside the main contractor Stepnell, to deliver this major project. Located in the heart of Loughborough, the development includes a purpose-built sports facility designed to support both student recreation and professional sports training. The project also features upgraded communal areas and welfare facilities, enhancing the overall student experience.

The Challenge:

One of the key challenges we encountered during the project was the need for careful co-ordination and organisation with other trades on-site. Due to the extensive installation of electrical containment system alongside significant mechanical ducting and pipework. It was essential that all work was meticulously planned and executed to avoid conflicts and ensure timely progress. Our team’s proactive approach to collaboration and scheduling allowed us to integrate our works within the busy construction environment, delivery high-quality results while maintaining efficiency and safety throughout the project.

Outstanding features:

As part of the project, we delivered a truly bespoke and innovative electrical installation that sets the facility apart. In the sports hall, we installed a custom-designed lighting system tailored to meet the rigorous standards set out by Sport England for competition-level performance. This highly flexible system allows for adjustable lux levels to precisely match the requirements of various sports, including badminton, basketball, cricket and more, ensuring optimal visibility and performance.

Beyond the sports hall, we added significant architectural and aesthetic value to the building. We installed feature LED lighting around the external windows to create a bold and dynamic façade, delivering a ‘wow’ factor that defines the college’s new flagship building. Inside, the staircase atrium was transformed with the installation of luxury wall light fittings, each hand-made in the UK, complemented by a contemporary high-level LED strip that adds depth, texture, and modern elegance to the space.

Our scope also included the careful design and positioning of new lighting columns, thoughtfully integrated with the surrounding environment and neighbouring 4G sports pitches to reduce light pollution. Furthermore, we installed dedicated electrical supplies to support the new digital scoreboards and automated basketball hoops, enhancing the versatility and technological capabilities of the sports facilities.
