ABOUT
Fusion specialise in managing the supply and installation of electrical and energy changes for business and domestic customers throughout the UK.
We have designed and installed a major solar energy installation project across four buildings at NHS Kettering General Hospital in Northamptonshire.
Backed by confirmed capital funding from GB Energy, Kettering General Hospital invested in renewable energy to improve operational sustainability and efficiently generate reliable energy.
The project would position the hospital as a leading adopter within the NHS of large-scale rooftop solar generation, supporting public infrastructure energy resilience and Net Zero commitments.
Meeting the safety and operational demands of the project, Fusion 360 were brought on board to deliver a full turnkey system – including the design, installation, commissioning and handover.
Solar Energy System:
Estimated Annual Solar Generation: 569.74 MWh
Estimated Annual CO₂ Reduction: 110.18 tonnes
Systems Used: 6 × SolarEdge Synergy units, 1,458 x (LR7-54HVH-475M HI-MO X10 Explorer) PV modules, 734 x S1000 optimiser units
The challenge:
Given that Kettering is an active hospital, the installation presented several challenges.
All works needed to be planned and carried out carefully, ensuring patient safety was never compromised and day-to-day hospital operations remained undisturbed.
To achieve this, rigorous coordination with involved stakeholders was needed at every stage, including daily liaison with estates, capital projects, infection prevention and fire safety teams.
How we’ve helped:
Given our expertise in solar energy and prior experience in installing electrical systems for NHS facilities, we were assigned as the Principal Designer and Principal Contractor.
To ensure all hospital operations remained fully functional throughout the solar energy installation, our team executed a phased building-by-building approach that guaranteed uninterrupted service continuity, safe segregation and managed lifting operations.
Aligning with HTM/HBN (Health Technical Memoranda/Health Building Notes) and Trust safety requirements, strict controls were also implemented across noise management, dust suppression and infection prevention.
The installation was carried out over a controlled four-month period, with key stages including mobilisation, phased roof-mount installation, DC/AC integration, testing, commissioning and final documentation.
All structural surveys have been completed across the four buildings, verifying roof integrity, fixing suitability and the safe planning of access arrangements for the works.
The outcome:
Through our solar energy services, supported by investment from GB Energy, NHS Kettering General Hospital has achieved a significant sustainable energy milestone – setting a new benchmark for public infrastructure.
Working to their requirements, we designed and installed a system that provides a 70% performance ratio and an annual specific yield of 823 kWh/kWp, delivering predictable long-term energy savings.
Their new onsite renewable generation also reduces reliance on carbon-heavy grid electricity, cutting annual carbon emissions by more than 110 tonnes – equivalent to roughly 5,060 trees planted!
